Midnapore Community Background

Midnapore-StreetThe community of Mid-Sun provides representation for the residents of both Midnapore and Sundance.

Midnapore was once a small town to the south of Calgary and was annexed by the city in 1961.  It is adjacent to Fish Creek Park and offers easy access to the city’s extensive pathway system. Of historical significance, there are two churches within the community that the province has deemed historical sites. Midnapore is also a lake community, containing a beautifully landscaped recreational lake complete with beaches and tobogganing hills. There is both a separate and a public school within the community.

Mid-Sun Community Association

Mid-Sun-Community-HallThese two communities share a large community centre, which offers a variety of programs. These include out of school and preschool programs, Tae Kwan Do, drama, badminton, break dancing, and school dances. Regular town hall meetings are held in the centre, and special events such as Canada Day are marked by parties at one of the community lakes.  Mid-Sun is also active in addressing concerns of the community. It represents community interests on the board of the new South Fish Creek Recreation Center. Mid-Sun has also established a volunteer Traffic and Development Committee to address traffic concerns in the area.

Midnapore Lake Residents Association

Midnapore-Lake-Residents-Association-HallThe creation of Lake Midnapore added on exciting new chapter to a community that was already rich in tradition and historic significance. Excavation of the lake took place between April 5 and July 31, 1976. A total of 1.5 million cubic yards were removed from the flat range land to create the 30 acre lake averaging 20 feet in depth and reaching 31 feet, and containing 165 million gallons of water. 300,000 cubic yards of earth were used to form the adjoining 55 foot high hill, the focal point of which is the waterfall over which 4,000 gallons of water per minute are circulated.

Midnapore Lake was developed by Keith Construction, which also developed several other lake communities in Calgary. The Midnapore Lake Residents Association (MLRA) is a not-for-profit association which owns, maintains and operates the facilities of the lake and park. Each residence is required to contribute to the assets of the MLRA each year to ensure the financial viability of the MLRA.

The mission statement of the Midnapore Lake Residents Association is to provide the Lake Association Members with a serene beautifully groomed family recreational facility that will remain in a financially secure and efficiently run position for future positions to enjoy as everyone presently enjoys.
